Another case of human remains discovered in the Rhode Island town has emerged, further fueling rumors of a possible serial killer roaming free in the U.S. region of New England.<\/p>\n

On the morning of Wednesday, May 14, just before 9:30 a.m., police responded to reports regarding a portion of human remains discovered in the Watch Hill area of Westerly.<\/p>\n

They found what appeared to be a human leg bone\u00a0near Everett Avenue<\/u><\/a>, not far from the town’s most famous historical landmark, the Ocean House Hotel, and Taylor Swift’s 1920s mansion, formerly known as High Watch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The remains \u2014 still unidentified \u2014 were taken to the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s Office for analysis and were\u00a0later confirmed<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to be, in fact, human. At this time, police suspect\u00a0no foul play<\/u>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Following the discovery, local news outlet NBC WJAR spoke over the phone with Westerly resident Taylor Day. Day was driving past the scene when she noticed three police cars \u2014 one undercover \u2014 and a medical examiner pulling up behind her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“It kind of alarmed me. It was just something very out of the ordinary for Westerly,” she\u00a0said<\/u><\/a>. “It’s scary for Westerly, because Westerly is a \u2014 I consider a very safe town,” she\u00a0continued<\/u><\/a>, adding that finding “just a leg” is “very suspicious.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Day also\u00a0shared<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that the crime scene was “just a couple of football fields away” from Swift’s home and the Ocean House. “My mind immediately went to all the theories that are being thrown around,” she\u00a0recalled<\/u><\/a>, referring to the ongoing speculation of a rampant serial killer in New England.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So far, there have been 12 discoveries of human remains across the region \u2014 in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut \u2014 since March, making this the 13th. Upon hearing about the latest findings, netizens took to social media to share their reactions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Apparently, all of the remains that have been found over the last few months are not suspected to be ‘suspicious’ according to the reports hours after finding the body. Isn’t that up to the medical examiner to determine after his investigation and autopsy?”\u00a0<\/i>one person\u00a0inquired<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“That’s what they said about the other 12 bodies they have found in 3 neighboring States,”<\/i>\u00a0another\u00a0remarked<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Dozens of bodies being found in southern New England, but don’t worry it’s not a serial killer\u2026 So we have dozens of murderers out there?”\u00a0<\/i>someone else\u00a0wondered<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“If it’s not suspicious then explain to us more,”<\/i>\u00a0a commenter\u00a0requested<\/u><\/a>. Former FBI instructor and certified police instructor Scott Duffey echoed this sentiment in a recent interview with Fox News.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Duffey argued that the reason speculation about a possible serial killer has only intensified in recent months is the lack of information. Although police have launched investigations into each of the 12 cases, few developments have been made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Authorities have also shared very few details about how each victim died. “From what I’ve seen or heard, first and foremost, not enough is being put out there, so we’ll continue to create that serial killer idea,” Duffey\u00a0said<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Indeed, internet users have even created groups where theories are shared and supposed connections are made between the deaths. Still, law enforcement in the affected areas has shut down rumors of a serial killer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
