text-utility-200\">\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li><strong>Lyle and Erik Menendez were resentenced to 50 years to life in prison on Tuesday May 13, which made them immediately eligible for parole.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The brothers were serving a life sentence without parole for the 1989 murders of their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez in their $5 million Beverly Hills home.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lyle and Erik have long claimed the murders were committed in self-defense after years of sexual abuse by Jose.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/menendez-brothers-risk-assessment-gavin-newsom-11686885\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Menendez brothers<\/a>, who were resentenced to 50 years to life and are now eligible for parole, may be released from prison in the coming months, lawyers predict.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cI think it&#8217;s a matter of months,\u201d former Assistant U.S. Attorney Neama Rahmani tells PEOPLE. \u201cIt may go a little bit faster, but I think it&#8217;ll be a few months.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Rahmani tells PEOPLE he believes the parole board will recommend the release of Erik and Lyle Menendez who are serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez in their $5 million Beverly Hills home.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The brothers have long said they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/menendez-brothers-habeas-petition-prosecutor-opposes-it-8776354\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">killed their parents<\/a>\u00a0because they feared for their lives, and that Jose had sexually abused them both for years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cI think the Menendez brothers will be out as early as the summer, if not fall, and have some sort of reality TV show in 2026,\u201d Rahmani says. \u201cIt&#8217;s going be Corrections and Rehabilitation\/AP<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Shaheen Manshoory also believes the brothers will be released.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cI think given their conduct over the last 35 years, there hasn&#8217;t been any major discipline actions against them. it&#8217;s an informal hearing, where the defendant will speak, victims will speak and so forth, and they&#8217;ll make the decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The decision could happen immediately and then it will be up to California Governor Gavin Newsom to either approve or reject the parole board\u2019s recommendation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cIt does go through a review period,&#8221; Manshoory says, adding that Governor Newsom will have 120 days to either decide to go along with it, modify it, or deny it. \u201cAnd if it&#8217;s denied, then the parole board will decide whether or not they can have another hearing to ask additional questions, or if they&#8217;ll just go with their standard timeframe, which is, they can request another parole hearing in three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u00a0Rahmani doesn\u2019t believe Newsom will block their release.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cIt&#8217;s politics, it&#8217;s popular,\u201d he says. \u201cI would say the vast majority of people support the release of the Menendez Brothers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_41-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">However, before any parole hearing, a clemency hearing is scheduled for the brothers on June 13.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_43-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">&#8220;The Governor can at any time pardon them,&#8221; says Rahmani. &#8220;Commute their sentence to time served. He can do whatever he wants with a stroke of his pen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_45-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">However, Rahmani doesn\u2019t believe Newsom \u201cwill act on it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_46-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_47-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cThere&#8217;s some political headwinds,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd probably he doesn&#8217;t want to be the one who pardoned or commuted the sentence of the Menendez brothers.
