On May 8, Vice President JD Vance responded to the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV.<\/p>\n

Writing on X, Vance said, \u201d \u2018I\u2019m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church. May God bless him!\u2019<\/p>\n

He added that millions of American Catholics would pray for his leadership.<\/p>\n

Vance expressed admiration and support, ending his message with: \u201cMay God bless him!\u201d<\/p>\n

His post came hours after white smoke signaled the conclave\u2019s decision in Vatican City.<\/p>\n

Previously, JD Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019 and has since spoken openly about his Christian beliefs.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, he met Pope Francis privately during Easter week at the Vatica<\/p>\n

The Vice President\u2019s Immigration spark Catholic criticism<\/h2>\n

In January, Vance defended Trump-era immigration policies.<\/p>\n

He also cited the concept of \u201cordo amoris\u201d, or rightly ordered love.<\/p>\n

Additionally, he explained that Christian love follows a hierarchy\u2014starting with family, then country, and then others globally.<\/p>\n

\u2018You love your family, and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens in your own country, and then after that you can focus and prioritize the rest of the world,\u2019 Vance said in an interview on Fox News.<\/p>\n

He doubled down on this belief in social media posts, stating: \u201cThe idea that there isn\u2019t a hierarchy of obligations violates basic common sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/span>Pope Prevost shared criticism of Vance\u2019s immigration stance<\/h2>\n

Earlier in 2025, then-Cardinal Robert Prevost shared two critical articles about Vance\u2019s use of \u201cordo amoris\u201d to justify his immigration views.
\nBoth articles came from respected Catholic sources.<\/p>\n

The first, by Kat Armas, appeared in the National Catholic Reporter.<\/p>\n

Armas wrote:\u2019JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn\u2019t ask us to rank our love for others,\u2019 the headline read as Armas criticized Vance for using the medieval concept to defend his vision of immigration.<\/p>\n

\u2018The empire\u2019s vision of love is built on scarcity, but the kingdom of God is built on abundance,\u2019 she wrote. \u2018If we find ourselves asking, \u2018Who is my neighbor?\u2019 \u2014 we are already missing the point. The better question is: How do I love without limits?\u2019<\/p>\n

She argued that love in God\u2019s kingdom is abundant and non-exclusive.<\/p>\n

The second article, from Jesuit priest Sam Sawyer, published in Jesuit Review, focused on Pope Francis\u2019 teachings.<\/p>\n

Sawyer wrote that many American Catholics support immigration views contrary to Catholic doctrine.<\/p>\n

He suggested that the Church\u00a0must challenge its followers<\/a>\u00a0to rethink their stance.<\/p>\n

In February, Pope Francis issued a letter to U.S. bishops discussing immigration, dignity, and love.<\/p>\n

Without naming Vance, the Pope referenced \u201cordo amoris\u201d directly.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that true love is modeled in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, promoting \u201ca fraternity open to all, without exception.\u201d<\/p>\n

The letter reflected the Pope\u2019s concern about politicized distortions of Gospel values.<\/p>\n

Although public disagreement existed, \u201cVance and Francis met peacefully\u201d just before the Pope\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

During their brief meeting, Vance said, \u201cI pray for you every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Francis passed away, Vance acknowledged the Pope\u2019s declining health but expressed gratitude for their final conversation.<\/p>\n
