The surprising salary for the newly elected Pope Leo has been revealed, and it might not be what you expect.<\/p>\n

As seagulls sat by totally unbothered, the rest of the\u00a0world<\/a>\u00a0watched yesterday (8 May) as\u00a0white smoke came<\/a>\u00a0billowing out of the chimney at the Sistine Chapel.<\/p>\n

Over 100 cardinals had gone into the Conclave to\u00a0elect the new pope<\/a>\u00a0and managed to get it done and dusted before the end of the second day.<\/p>\n

In the end, it was an American who was chosen to take on this big boss role, 69-year-old Cardinal Robert Prevost, and he picked his\u00a0new papal name<\/a>\u00a0of Leo XIV.<\/p>\n

While the late\u00a0Pope Francis<\/a>\u00a0may have been known as the \u2018humble pope<\/a>\u2019 who lived a pretty simple life and gave to others, those in this position of Head of the Catholic Church do get given some\u00a0money<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What is the new pope entitled to?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s not exactly a traditional salary but rather that the Vatican makes sure every little thing is provided for the man in the sacred position.<\/p>\n

The smallest independent country in the world, it covers everything from housing and\u00a0food<\/a>\u00a0to transportation and\u00a0healthcare<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The new pope will have access to cars,\u00a0travel<\/a>\u00a0and security as he lives what is pretty much an all-inclusive life.<\/p>\n

Pope Leo XIV is said to follow in the footsteps of Pope Francis with a simple lifestyle, with his predecessor said to have actively refused any type of personal income while he was serving as Head of the Church, admired by millions.<\/p>\n

What salary can a pope earn?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It is said that the pope may be entitled to about \u20ac2,500 (\u00a32,100-ish) a month but the late pope francis’ life mirrored what his namesake, St Francis of Assisi, was known for \u2013 a commitment to simplicity and the poor.<\/p>\n

But that doesn\u2019t mean to say he was worth nothing, with all the papal assets and services paid for by the Vatican, it\u2019s thought by some that Pope Francis had a net worth right up in the millions.<\/p>\n

The pope also gets a decent allowance to make charitable donations, another thing Francis was known for being generous with.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not quite known just what Pope Leo XIV\u2019s net worth is but while he doesn\u2019t get a traditional salary as Head of the Catholic Church, he reportedly earned between \u20ac4,000 and \u20ac5,000 per month when he was a cardinal.<\/p>\n
