In February, Leo, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, posted two news articles to his X profile. One, titled, \u201cJD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn\u2019t ask us to rank our love for others,\u201d refuted Vance\u2019s proclamation about Christian priorities on Fox News. The other delved deeper into the late Pope Francis\u2019 criticism of Vance using the Catholic concept of \u201cordo amoris\u201d to justify the Trump administration\u2019s immigration policies.<\/p>\n

Vance met with Pope Francis just a few hours before the pontiff\u2019s death on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025. The religious leader initially dismissed the Catholic convert, but Vance was eventually granted a private audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill,\u201d Vance later shared on social media. \u201cIt was really quite beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the Vatican\u2019s announcement of Pope Leo\u2019s election, Trump took to social media to celebrate the appointment of an American pope.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,\u201d the president wrote on Truth Social. \u201cIt is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Trump initially had a different American cardinal in mind for the role. After joking with reporters ahead of the papal conclave that he\u2019d like to be the next pope, the president offered a hometown pick.<\/p>\n

\u201cI must say we have a cardinal who happens to be out of a place called New York who\u2019s very good,\u201d he noted, likely referring to New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan. \u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dolan offered the invocation during Trump\u2019s second inauguration ceremony in January. He also led Pope Francis\u2019 funeral mass service at New York City\u2019s famous St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral on Saturday, April 26.<\/p>\n

Prior to the conclave, religious experts told PEOPLE that the appointment of an American pope was unlikely.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that there\u2019s no chance for an American pope just because the United States is already so powerful in the world,\u201d said Dr. Bill Cavanaugh, a professor of Catholic studies at DePaul University.<\/p>\n
