President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a><\/span>\u00a0cheered the\u00a0election<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of the first American Pope Robert Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV.<\/p>\n

‘I’ve seen the smoke but I haven’t seen the pope,’ he told reporters at a military families event at the\u00a0White House<\/a><\/span>\u00a0alongside his wife Melania.<\/p>\n

Trump was in a gleeful mood, planting several big smooches on Melania’s cheeks throughout the event.<\/p>\n

He later wrote on Truth Social that it is an ‘honor to realize’ he’s the first American in the top position and says he’s looking forward to meeting in person.<\/p>\n

Vice President JD Vance reacted to the news of Pope Leo XIV’s election on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

‘Congratulations to Leo XIV, the first American Pope, on his election!’ he wrote on X. ‘I\u2019m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church. May God bless him!’<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Vance converted to the Catholic faith in 2019 and was one of the last public officials to meet with Pope Francis before he died.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The vice president did not respond the pope’s former posts on X sharing op-eds and articles critical of President Trump and Vance when he was Cardinal Robert Provost.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
