The amount that illegal immigrants will be paid by the government to ‘self deport’ has been revealed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last month, the Trump administration\u00a0made an offer to immigrants<\/a>\u00a0who are undocumented in the\u00a0US<\/a>\u00a0as they continue to try and clamp down on immigration.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re going to give them a stipend,” President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0said at the time. “We\u2019re going to give them some\u00a0money<\/a>\u00a0and a plane ticket, and then we\u2019re going to work with them \u2014 if they\u2019re good \u2014 if we want them back in, we\u2019re going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can.”<\/p>\n

When the so-called ‘self-deportation programme’ was first announced, the exact amount people would receive for returning to their home country wasn’t outlined. However, a newly released statement from Homeland Security has now disclosed the sum immigrants will be paid, and people have described the amount as an ‘insult’.<\/p>\n

Part of the announcement shared yesterday (May 5)\u00a0read<\/a>: “Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a historic opportunity for illegal aliens to receive both financial and travel assistance to facilitate travel back to their home country through the CBP Home App.<\/p>\n

“Any illegal alien who uses the CBP Home App to self-deport will also receive a stipend of $1,000 dollars, paid after their return to their home country has been confirmed through the app.”<\/p>\n

DHS continued to say that this method is a ‘dignified way to leave the US’ and will avoid people having any run-ins with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).<\/p>\n

Supposedly this is the most cost affective way for America to get illegal immigrants out of the country as it costs (on average) $17,121 to arrest, detain, and remove an illegal immigrant, DHS claims.<\/p>\n

The department said it had already paid for a plane ticket for one migrant to return home to Honduras from Chicago and said more tickets have been booked for this week and next.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the offer, Trump told reporters a the Oval Office yesterday,\u00a0as per<\/a>\u00a0The Independent: “We\u2019re gonna pay each one a certain amount of money and get them a beautiful flight back to where they came from, and they have a period of time, and if they make it, we\u2019re gonna work with them so that maybe someday, with a little work, they can come back in.”<\/p>\n

Some people have criticized the government’s measly $1,000 offer though. One person penned on\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0following the announcement: “This is an insult\u2014both to migrants and to Trump\u2019s own supporters. To migrants, because it\u2019s absurd to think that people risked everything to come to the US for a mere thousand dollars.”<\/p>\n

Another person added: “That\u2019s cheap! Our UK government offers \u00a33000.”<\/p>\n
