An update on the status of Kavan Markwood, the Pirates fan who fell from the stands at PNC Park on Wednesday, has been released following his 21-foot tumble.<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe page set up for the 20-year-old claims he is now awake, alert, and communicating.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Phillips, the woman who made the page, offered the update this weekend, noting that Markwood has a long road to full recovery but that his progress, given the gravity of the situation, is miraculous.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs of this morning, Kavan is awake, alert, and able to speak,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>she wrote<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cAfter everything he\u2019s been through since the accident on Wednesday night, this progress feels nothing short of miraculous.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cHe still has a long road ahead of him, but today brought a moment of hope that we\u2019ve all been holding onto,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she added.<\/p>\n

Markwood fell after Pittsburgh hitter Andrew McCutchen gave the Pirates a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning. CBS reported that a second fan jumped from seating in a lower area to assist him. He was eventually stretchered off, leaving the field motionless.<\/p>\n

The incident prompted a 10-minute delay, with trainers and police attending to Markwood.<\/p>\n

The Pirates conducted an internal investigation and have since revealed that Markwood did not purchase any alcohol but drank two beers during the game.<\/p>\n
