Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0said “I don’t know” when he was asked if it is his job to uphold the U.S. Constitution as the president during a new interview, as he reflected on his first 100 days in office for his second term.<\/p>\n The president, 78, sat down with NBC News\u2019\u00a0Kristen Welker<\/a>\u00a0for an exclusive interview that aired on the Sunday, May 4, episode of\u00a0Meet the Press<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n At one point, Welker, 48, and Trump discussed due process \u2014 the fairness in legal proceedings \u2014 with the journalist asking the politician if he agreed that “citizens and non-citizens” in the United States deserved such.<\/p>\n “I don’t know. I’m not, I\u2019m not a lawyer. I don’t know,” responded Trump, prompting Welker to push back, “Well,\u00a0the\u00a0Fifth Amendment says as much.”<\/p>\n As Trump continued, “I don’t know. It seems \u2013 it might say that, but if you’re talking about that, then we’d have to have a million or 2 million or 3 million trials,” he then added, “We have thousands of people that are some murderers and some drug dealers and some of\u00a0the\u00a0worst people on Earth. Some of\u00a0the\u00a0worst, most dangerous people on Earth. And I was elected to get them\u00a0the\u00a0hell out of here, and\u00a0the\u00a0courts are holding me from doing it.”<\/p>\n When pressed further by Welker, who asked, “But even given those numbers that you’re talking about, don’t you need to uphold\u00a0the\u00a0Constitution of\u00a0the\u00a0United States as president?” Trump stated, “I don’t know.”<\/p>\n “I have to respond by saying, again, I have brilliant lawyers that work for me, and they are going to obviously follow what\u00a0the\u00a0Supreme Court said. What you said is not what I heard\u00a0the\u00a0Supreme Court said. I have never had requests so strong as that. But it’s something that, to\u00a0the\u00a0best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do.”<\/p>\n “I don’t know if that’s Constitutional that they’re not allowing you to do it or anything else. But, there are many people selling\u00a0the\u00a02028 hat,” he continued. “But this is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward. But I think we’re going to have four years, and I think four years is plenty of time to do something really spectacular.”<\/p>\n Welker, reiterating to Trump that “the\u00a0Constitution does prohibit it,” told the politician that his “allies” are “pretty serious” about finding a way for him to run for a third term.<\/p>\n “That’s because they like\u00a0the\u00a0job I’m doing, and it’s a compliment. It’s really a great compliment,” he said in response.<\/p>\n As Welker further pushed to ask if “anyone in an official capacity presented” him with a plan for a third term, Trump said, “Well, in a capacity of being a big supporter, many people have said different things, but I’m not looking at that.”<\/p>\n The\u00a0Meet the Press<\/em>\u00a0interview aired on the heels of\u00a0Trump’s viral sitdown<\/a>\u00a0with ABC News’ Terry Moran.
