Kennedy Jr. announced a ban on artificial food dyes \u2014 but as dietician Dr. Jessica Knurick tells PEOPLE, &#8220;there was no ban&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Knurick explains that &#8220;we don&#8217;t really use&#8221; the two dyes that may have their authorization revoked<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>As for the other dyes, the FDA said it will be &#8220;working with the industry&#8221; to eliminate them, but &#8220;there was no regulatory action&#8221; taken, according to Dr. Knurick, who called the announcement &#8220;performative&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/rfk-jr-confirmed-health-secretary-9344760\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/a>\u00a0Secretary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tag\/robert-kennedy-jr\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a>\u00a0and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary announced on April 21 plans to ban artificial food dyes, citing them as part of an ongoing system that, as Kennedy has said in the past, has been allowed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/robert-f-kennedy-jr-plans-to-ban-synthetic-food-dyes-11719857\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">\u201cmass poison\u201d<\/a>\u00a0children.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">&#8220;We are going to get rid of the dyes,&#8221; Kennedy said, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2025\/04\/22\/nx-s1-5372637\/food-dyes-ban-fda-rfk-kennedy\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">NPR<\/a>, as Makary said they were a part of &#8220;a toxic soup of synthetic chemicals.&#8221; Kennedy claimed, &#8220;the industry has voluntarily agreed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">He said he had\u00a0reached \u201can understanding\u201d\u00a0with food manufacturers to stop using petroleum-based food colorings by 2026.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The only problem with the announcement? \u201cThere was no ban,\u201d dietician\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drjessicaknurick\/?hl=en\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Dr. Jessica Knurick<\/a>\u00a0tells PEOPLE. \u201cThere was no regulatory action done. And to do that, there is a pretty involved process, but essentially, you need solid evidence that substances are unsafe under current use.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">On April 22, the FDA appeared to soften these initial declarations, releasing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/hhs-fda-phase-out-petroleum-based-synthetic-dyes-nations-food-supply\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">statement<\/a>\u00a0saying it was going to \u201cinitiate the process\u201d to \u201crevoke authorization\u201d for citrus red #2, and orange B, and &#8220;phase out&#8221; &#8220;petroleum-based synthetic dyes.&#8221; But, Dr. Knurick says, tcitrus red #2, and orange B are dyes that \u201cwe don&#8217;t really use anymore,\u201d with the exception of one sometimes being used in orange peels.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The statement also announced the FDA would be \u201cworking with industry to eliminate six remaining synthetic dyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cIt&#8217;s performative,\u201d Dr. Knurick says. \u201cIt makes people think that they have this big win, and they&#8217;re making our food supply safer when really our food supply is getting less safe and this did nothing because there&#8217;s no regulation attached to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">But there are ways to make our food supply safer \u2014 and a real reason to avoid artificially dyed food, she tells PEOPLE.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"><strong>Why is artificial dye in our food?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThe color of food significantly shapes how we perceive its flavor, its sweetness, its freshness, its quality,\u201d Dr. Knurick tells PEOPLE, explaining that when food items are ultra processed, \u201cthey lose a lot of their color. If you didn&#8217;t add color with a natural dye or an artificial food dye back in,\u00a0a lot of products would just be brown or gray, and consumers do not like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"><strong>What is petroleum-based food dye?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cHave you ever heard petroleum-based dye before, like, two weeks ago?\u201d Dr. Knurick asked. \u201cI ask that because I think it&#8217;s a new talking point coming out of this [Make America Healthy Again] movement.\u201d The term, she explains, stems from how how synthetic food dyes are made, from a chemistry perspective.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cThey need carbon as a source \u2026 petroleum is this naturally occurring liquid that happens to be really rich in these hydrocarbons,\u201d Dr. Knurick explains. \u201cUsing petroleum as a carbon source to then synthesize a new kind of chemical is not the same as putting petroleum in your food or drinking petroleum. You don&#8217;t need to use as much of them because they&#8217;re so potent, and they are generally cheaper,\u201d Dr. Knurick explained. Artificial dyes are also less likely to cause an allergic reaction, as opposed to, say, a botanically-derived dye.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"><strong>Are artificial food dyes safe?<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThe president and CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consumerbrandsassociation.org\/press-releases\/consumer-brands-issues-statement-on-hhs-fda-phasing-out-food-dyes-from-food-supply\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Consumer Brands Association<\/a>\u00a0came out and made a statement saying the ingredients have been rigorously studied. They&#8217;ve been demonstrated to be safe,\u201d Dr. Knurick said of Melissa Hockstad\u2019s April 22 announcement. It&#8217;s not like they&#8217;re a preservative or an emulsifier that&#8217;s actually helping with the nutritional content of the food. Really, what they are is they&#8217;re a marketing tool,\u201d Dr. Knurick said. \u201cArtificial food dyes are really used in a lot of products that are heavily marketed to children. They&#8217;re not used in nutrient-dense foods that I, as a dietitian, would be recommending.
