Duolingo’s CEO, Luis von Ahn, has faced some backlash after announcing the company will become ‘AI first’ and replace contractor roles.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0isn’t anything new; however, as it grows in scope, a few companies have been\u00a0looking to implement it<\/a>\u00a0in their\u00a0businesses.<\/a><\/p>\n

Duolingo is the latest company to announce that it will utilise more AI to produce a better product for its users. For those who haven’t tried and failed to learn a new language, Duolingo is a language-learning website and app that has garnered a huge following on\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0due\u00a0to its hilariously bizarre marketing.<\/a><\/p>\n

But this new announcement hasn’t gone down well with some. The company released a statement on LinkedIn laying out its plan to become ‘AI-first.’<\/p>\n

In its announcement, Duolingo said it would be rolling out a few ‘constructive constraints’, which includes changing to how it works with contractors, looking for AI use in hiring and in performance reviews, and that ‘headcount will only be given if a team cannot automate more of their work’ (via<\/a>\u00a0The Verge).<\/p>\n

“Being AI-first means we will need to rethink how much we work. Making minor tweaks to systems designed for humans won\u2019t get us there.” it says.<\/p>\n

The email insisted it wasn\u2019t about replacing workers of the company, but rather \u2018removing bottlenecks\u2019, so that employees can ‘focus on creative work and real problems, not repetitive tasks’.<\/p>\n

They added in their post: “What doesn’t change: We will remain a company that cares deeply about its employees.”<\/p>\n
