The death of Pope Francis has sent shockwaves through the globe, with thousands flocking to St Peter\u2019s Basilica at the Vatican to pay their respects ahead of this weekend\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n

A number of famous faces confirmed earlier this week that they\u2019d be in attendance as the late pope is\u00a0laid to rest<\/a>, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and\u00a0Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then, of course, there\u2019s\u00a0US President Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a man that hasn\u2019t been hugely in favour with\u00a0Francis<\/a>\u00a0in the past.<\/p>\n

“He was a good man, worked hard and loved the world,” the American leader said in the wake of\u00a0Francis\u2019 death<\/a>\u00a0on Monday.<\/p>\n

The late pope, who was 88 when he passed away, was an outspoken critic of some of Trump\u2019s policies, which he said were \u2018not Christian\u2019.<\/p>\n

Before his first term in office, Trump had famously vowed to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.<\/p>\n

Speaking to press at the time, Francis said bluntly: \u201cA person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the Gospel.”<\/p>\n

Shortly before his latest inauguration earlier this year, Francis also lashed out at similar plans to carry out mass deportations.<\/p>\n

“If it is true, it will be a disgrace, because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing pay the bill for the imbalance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt won’t do. This is not the way to solve things.”<\/p>\n

In February, he also\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0an open letter to US bishops, where he described the new president\u2019s plans as a \u2018crisis\u2019 for the nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have followed closely the major crisis that is taking place in the United States with the initiation of a program of mass deportations,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rightly formed conscience cannot fail to make a critical judgment and express its disagreement with any measure that tacitly or explicitly identifies the illegal status of some migrants with criminality.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Francis acknowledged the country\u2019s need to \u2018defend itself and keep communities safe\u2019, he felt the act of deporting people \u2018who in many cases have left their own land for reasons of extreme poverty, insecurity, exploitation, persecution or serious deterioration of the environment\u2019 damaged the \u2018dignity of many men and women, and of entire families\u2019, while also putting them in a state of \u2018particular vulnerability and defenselessness\u2019.<\/p>\n

“This is not a minor issue: an authentic rule of law is verified precisely in the dignified treatment that all people deserve, especially the poorest and most marginalized,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cDevelopment cannot come about through the privilege of some and the sacrifice of others.
