On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, the 88-year-old pontiff surprised the world by\u00a0appearing in Vatican City<\/a>, just three weeks after being discharged from the hospital following a near-fatal case of pneumonia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His physical condition, however, was clearly deteriorating. Images from the day showed the pope in a wheelchair, assisted by aides. He was captured being pushed onto the Basilica balcony, offering a gentle wave to the cheering crowd below.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
