Newlyweds Bradley Bartell and Sylvia Camilla Mu\u00f1oz-Lira pictured their married life as growing old together, having children and enjoying spending time as a couple.<\/p>\n

However, their first few weeks as\u00a0a married couple have been anything less than smooth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0couple<\/a>\u00a0were\u00a0travelling<\/a>\u00a0home to Wisconsin from their belated honeymoon in Puerto Rico when Mu\u00f1oz-Lira was taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).<\/p>\n

Mu\u00f1oz-Lira, who is from Peru, had overstayed her J-1 visa \u2013 a \u2018nonimmigrant\u2019 visa for individuals \u2018approved to participate in exchange visitor programs in the United States\u2019.<\/p>\n

She had secured the temporary visa in 2019 after being accepted to a work-study programme in Wisconsin, but was unable to return to Peru the following year when the pandemic limited\u00a0travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bradley has revealed he is ‘concerned’ for his wife who is still being detained after her visa expired (Facebook\/Bradley Bartell)<\/cite><\/div>\n

Instead, Mu\u00f1oz-Lira chose to continue working in the US, going on to meet now-husband, Bartell.<\/p>\n

Shortly after getting\u00a0married<\/a>, she filed paperwork to obtain legal citizenship, with US Citizenship and Immigration Services confirming that her case was under review.<\/p>\n

Bartell said they thought it was safe to travel to a US territory while her application was pending.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the New York Post, Bartell\u00a0said<\/a>: “It was kind of like a slap in the face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in shock and unsure what to do at the time. It was terrible.”<\/p>\n

He added that his wife has calmed down since the initial detainment, but there’s still uncertainty if she will return home. He continued: “She\u2019s worried because there\u2019s a lot of uncertainty in how this is all going down.<\/p>\n

“She\u2019s calmed down a little now that we have an attorney giving us an idea of how the process is going to go. But we still haven\u2019t gotten a court date.”<\/p>\n

Bradley has previously claimed it was a week before he heard from his wife and found out where she was actually being held – Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana.<\/p>\n

Bradley told USA Today: “Emotionally, I\u2019m concerned for her. It can\u2019t be easy being trapped in a room with 100 other people. They don\u2019t have anything in there. It\u2019s just so wasteful.”<\/p>\n

He added: “I knew they were cracking down. I guess I didn\u2019t know how it was going down.”<\/p>\n

Despite his wife being detained by ICE, Bradley has revealed\u00a0to<\/a>\u00a0Newsweek that he ‘doesn’t regret the vote’ for\u00a0Trump<\/a>\u00a0as US President. Speaking previously he explained: “I still support our president.”<\/p>\n

Bradley is trying to raise funds to help cover legal fees, as he’s been told it could run upwards of $10,000 (GoFundMe)<\/cite><\/div>\n

Yet, he added that he did wonder if the government was prepared for the influx of detainees.<\/p>\n

He shared: “It\u2019s kind of a tough slope. I just feel they need to get stuff moving on this because they\u2019re holding a lot of people and it\u2019s costing the taxpayers money. It\u2019s taking a long time to even get dates set for people to speak with judges.”<\/p>\n

Bradley admitted he initially assumed Trump\u2019s administration would only deport immigrants with a criminal history, or those who had crossed the border illegally.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s gone a little farther than that,” he said. \u201cThey\u2019re just grabbing anyone they can.”<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cMe, personally, I\u2019m happy to have anyone who wants to come here and have a good life and live responsibly, but there is a problem with letting gangsters come here too.”<\/p>\n

Bradley has now set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his wife\u2019s legal fees as he reveals they could run up to $10k. In the page description, he writes: “This money will be used for legal support and the bond money for my wife.
