JD Vance is covering himself in glory on social media once again, with the people of Twitter calling out the vice president after his ’embarrassing comment’ upon his arrival in Greenland.<\/p>\n

The 40-year-old arrived at the ice-locked US military base of Pituffik in north-west Greenland earlier today (28 March), and has certainly p****d off a fair few people with his attempt at a light-hearted joke.<\/p>\n

While President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0has only been in office since January of this year, his desire to take over Greenland began during his\u00a0first term back in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 78-year-old insisted that ‘we have to have Greenland. It’s not a question of ‘do you think we can do without it.’ We can’t.’<\/p>\n

Trump is desperate to annex Greenland and has also been very friendly with Russia (Win McNamee\/Getty Images)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His desire to acquire the world’s largest island seemingly stems from wanting to best protect US security, as if Russia were to send missiles towards the US, the shortest route for nuclear weapons would be via the North Pole and Greenland.<\/p>\n

During a speech to Congress, Trump said that\u00a0control of Greenland<\/a>\u00a0was essential ‘for national security and international security’ but added that the semi-autonomous country, which is home to around 57,000 people, had the right to choose its own future.<\/p>\n

He did also stress that ‘if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America.’<\/p>\n

However, Greenland’s Acting Prime Minister Mute Egede, along with much of the country’s population, has protested the unofficial visit.<\/p>\n

Egede said: “Just for the record, the government of Greenland has not extended any invitations for any visits, neither private nor official.”<\/p>\n
