Critics have issued scathing responses to the Trump administration\u2019s new scheme to vet the social media profiles of US-based immigrants, with some claiming the policy \u2018undermines the fundamental values that make America a beacon of freedom\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On\u00a0President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s first day of his second term in office, he signed an Executive Order (E.O.) entitled \u2018Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats\u2019.<\/p>\n

The E.O. states that\u00a0the Republicans<\/a>\u00a0wants to protect\u00a0United States<\/a>\u00a0citizens from a variety of attacks, including those from people who threaten national security and \u2018espouse hateful ideology\u2019.<\/p>\n

It also outlined that the country needed to be more \u2018vigilant during the visa-issuance process\u2019 to simultaneously protect Americans\u2019 livelihoods and the country\u2019s national interests.<\/p>\n

In Section Two of the E.O., the 78-year-old revealed a \u2018rigorous\u2019\u00a0Green Card vetting<\/a>\u00a0and screening process would be set up across agencies to the \u2018maximum degree possible\u2019.<\/p>\n

How do you currently apply for a Green Card on US soil?<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re in the US and you\u2019re applying for a Green Card, then you need to file an immigration petition form and Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).<\/p>\n

You also need to demonstrate your eligibility for a Permanent Resident Card by gathering your passport, proof of\u00a0relationships<\/a>, medical examinations, and\u00a0police<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0court<\/a>\u00a0records.<\/p>\n

If the new policy comes into effect, then you will also have to hand over your social media identities. AKA handles and associated\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0platform names.<\/p>\n

Why is the Trump Administration proposing you showcase your social media accounts?<\/h2>\n

According to a regulation document,\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on March 5, this information will: \u201cenable and help inform identity verification, national security and public safety screening, and vetting, and related inspections.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis data will be collected from certain populations of individuals on applications for immigration-related benefits and is necessary for the enhanced identity verification, vetting and national security screening, and inspection conducted by USCIS and required under the E.O,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also stated that data extracted from social media accounts will help validate an applicant\u2019s identity, determining whether \u2018such grant of a benefit poses a security or public-safety threat to the United States\u2019.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that visa applicants living outside of the US already have to share their social media handles with the USCIS.<\/p>\n

Therefore Trump\u2019s proposal is an expansion of the policy, affecting those applying for permanent residency or seeking asylum from the US.<\/p>\n

The new policy has received backlash from US citizens<\/h2>\n

Following the USCIS\u2019s claims that vetting social media accounts is necessary for \u2018enhanced identity verification, vetting and national security screening\u2019, critics have been having their say.<\/p>\n

\u201cChilling Effect on Free Speech: The fear of government scrutiny of online expression will undoubtedly stifle free speech,\u201d another comment read,\u00a0as per<\/a>\u00a0The Independent. \u201cThis is particularly concerning for individuals from countries with different political climates, who may fear the misinterpretation of their online activity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Someone else replied: \u201cTons of people totally downplayed how the election outcome might affect life in America. This is why you study history – so you can avoid experiencing the s**t yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis policy undermines the fundamental values that make America a beacon of freedom, including free speech, privacy, and human rights,\u201d another argued.<\/p>\n

Robert McCaw, director of government affairs at the Council on American-Islamic Relations has slammed Trump after hearing the 47th President of the United States wants immigrants to fork over their social media profiles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis policy would disparately impact Muslim and Arab applicants seeking U.S. citizenship that have voiced support for Palestinian human rights,\u201d he\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0The Intercept. \u201cCollecting the social media identifiers of any potential green card applicants or citizens is the means to silencing their lawful speech.\u201d<\/p>\n
