Glenn Ivey (D-MD) criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) during a town hall on Tuesday and called for new leadership within the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was critical to make sure that we block that bill,\u201d Ivey said of the GOP\u2019s continuing resolution to fund the government for the remaining fiscal year, largely at the same level as under President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"qualified qualified-1\">\u201cI was deeply disappointed that Senator Schumer voted with the Republicans. You know you\u2019re on bad ground when you get a\u00a0personal tweet\u00a0from\u00a0Donald Trump thanking you for your vote,\u201d Ivey continued, noting that Trump acknowledged Schumer\u2019s decision to back the spending bill.<\/p>\n<p>Ivey then suggested that the only good position for Democrats was not to work on behalf of their constituents and the country, but to behave strictly as an opposition party to Trump and Republicans, no matter what.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to be there. We don\u2019t want to be there. And it\u2019s important for us to make sure that, at this critical time, we\u2019ve got leaders that are gonna take us in the right direction. We had [House Minority Leader] Hakeem Jeffries [D-N.Y.] lead the fight against the CR to the tune of 213 to one,\u201d Ivey said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchumer was on the other side. Hakeem met the moment Schumer did not. And so I respect Chuck Schumer. I think he\u2019s had a great long-standing career. He\u2019s done a lot of great things. But I\u2019m afraid that it may be time for the Senate Democrats to pick new leadership as we move forward,\u201d Ivey said, going on to say that his party should have moved to shut down the government despite previous predictions over years of doom and gloom if the GOP shut down the government.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\"><\/div>\n<p>Schumer strongly defended his vote on several news programs this week, including on CBS Mornings, where he argued that a shutdown would have encouraged the Project 2025-inspired reduction of the federal government while simultaneously weakening the courts\u2014Democrats\u2019 primary tool for countering Trump\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer also explained on CBS that \u201cone of the Republican senators who knows said to us, \u2018You\u2019ll be in the shutdown for six to nine months until we totally destroy the federal government.\u2019 So the shutdown was a much worse alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WATCH:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Schumer on CBS claims &#8220;one of the Republican senators who knows said to us, &#8216;you&#8217;ll be in the shutdown for six to nine months until we totally destroy the federal government.&#8217; So the shutdown was a much worse alternative.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8ERtdtlhCj\">pic.twitter.com\/8ERtdtlhCj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/atrupar\/status\/1902016022795694438?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 18, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Ivey isn\u2019t the only Democrat to call for Schumer to be replaced, as Axios\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/03\/19\/chuck-schumer-house-democrat-calls-step-down?stream=top&amp;utm_source=alert&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=alerts_hill_leaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\">\n<p><em>Rep.\u00a0Delia Ramirez\u00a0(D-Ill.), asked at a town hall on Tuesday whether Schumer should \u201cretire or step down,\u201d nodded her head and said \u201cyes.\u201d Ramirez\u2019s comments have not previously been reported.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The liberal group Indivisible has also called on Schumer to resign as leader.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One House Democrat, asked if more could follow, told Axios: \u201cI think there are some already there but just haven\u2019t been asked directly or avoided the question.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) also took a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conservativebrief.com\/pelosi-schumer-3-90216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thinly veiled jab<\/a>\u00a0at Schumer this week.<\/p>\n<p>During a press conference in San Francisco, Pelosi stated that she was confident Schumer would be able to lead the Senate\u2019s Democratic caucus moving forward. However, she contended that the Brooklyn Democrat had made too many compromises to Republicans when he suddenly declared that he would vote to move the government funding bill that the GOP had crafted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI myself don\u2019t give away anything for nothing,\u201d Pelosi said. \u201cI think that\u2019s what happened the other day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could have, in my view, perhaps gotten [Republicans] to agree to a third way,\u201d Pelosi stated, alluding to a desperate plan by congressional Democrats to prolong the current government spending for 30 days while they engage in discussions on a more comprehensive bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may not have agreed to it, but at least the public would have seen them not agreeing to it \u2014 then [Republicans] would have been shutting the government down,\u201d Pelosi argued.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; Rep.
