US Netflix viewers are all saying the same thing after learning the true meaning behind the word \u2018nonce\u2019 from\u00a0Adolescence<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The four-part\u00a0crime-drama series<\/a>, starring\u00a0This is England\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Stephen Graham<\/a>, 51, and newcomer\u00a0Owen Cooper<\/a>, 15, centres around the arrest of a 13-year-old boy suspected of\u00a0murdering<\/a>\u00a0his female classmate.<\/p>\n

What transpires is a modern-horror story,\u00a0depicting the very-real threat online incel culture<\/a>\u00a0and misogynistic radicalisation can pose on impressionable minds.<\/p>\n

Adolescence<\/em><\/a>, which has already shot to the top of the\u00a0Netflix<\/a>\u00a0most-watched list, was\u00a0inspired by real events<\/a>\u00a0and filmed in a continuous one-shot format by director Philip Barantini.<\/p>\n

While the first episode was nailed in just two takes on the same day, the subsequent instalments\u00a0took multiple attempts to nail<\/a>\u00a0– all three of which took place on the fifth and\u00a0final day of filming.<\/a><\/p>\n

The finished result has divided fans who have binged the entire series since it dropped on Netflix last week, with some going as far as to\u00a0brand the miniseries as \u2018disturbing\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Former\u00a0Top Gear<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Grand Tour<\/em>\u00a0host Jeremy Clarkson has also been enjoying the programme, taking to\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0to discuss how certain scenes in episode two were masterfully shot.<\/p>\n

Confusion amongst American viewers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

But American fans in particular have been discussing a moment that took place in episode four, which sees Graham\u2019s character Eddie realise his van has been vandalised with the word \u2018nonce\u2019.<\/p>\n

The grieving father, who is celebrating his 50th birthday at the time, eventually confronts the perpetrators who tagged his van, angrily threatening them.<\/p>\n

The word \u2018nonce\u2019 is apparently puzzling Americans, with one taking to X to write: \u201cI was today years old, after watching Adolescence, when I understood what Brits mean when they call someone a \u2018nonce\u2019.<\/p>\n

Someone else echoed: \u201c\u2019Ta, mate.\u2019 \u2018Nonce.\u2019 \u2018Gaff.\u2019\u00a0Adolescence<\/em>\u00a0is teaching me so much about how people speak in England.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re also confused by what the tag on Eddie\u2019s van means, then we\u2019ll put it plainly.<\/p>\n

In British English, a \u2018nonce\u2019 is a slang term for someone who commits a crime involving sex, especially with children.<\/p>\n

However, in American English, the word nonce means is the one, particular, or present occasion, purpose, or use, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.<\/p>\n

So, it\u2019s clear to see why US Netflix viewers are getting confused.<\/p>\n

What has Stephen Graham said about his character?<\/h2>\n

Eddie\u2019s plumbing van being tagged with the word \u2018nonce\u2019 suggests that he may have abused Jamie, inadvertently causing his son to commit a brutal crime against his classmate.<\/p>\n

However, Graham is against this narrative,\u00a0telling<\/a>\u00a0The Guardian: \u201cI didn\u2019t want his dad to be a violent man. I didn\u2019t want mum to be a drinker. I didn\u2019t want our young boy to be molested by his uncle Tony. I wanted to remove all of those possibilities for us to go: ‘Oh, that\u2019s why he did it’.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with Netflix\u2019s Tudum, he added: \u201cOne of our aims was to ask, \u2018What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
