He might have only been elected as Canada’s prime minister two days ago, but Mark Carney has wasted no time in throwing shade at US president Donald Trump during a passionate acceptance speech.<\/p>\n

The 59-year-old’s latest remarks came last night (10 March) amid conversations over a trade war between\u00a0Canada<\/a>\u00a0and its southernly neighbours, following Carney’s predecessor Justin Trudeau’s firm stance on the matter.<\/p>\n

Last week,\u00a0Trump<\/a>‘s administration\u00a0hit Canadian goods with a savage new 25 percent tariff<\/a>, after which Canada retaliated by adding its own 25 percent tariffs onto $155b in\u00a0US<\/a>\u00a0goods.<\/p>\n

Discussing the move at the time,\u00a0former Canadian PM Trudeau, 54, told press in a televised address<\/a>: “It\u2019s not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they point out that even though you are a very smart guy, this a very dumb thing to do.”<\/p>\n

A month earlier, Trudeau also hit back at a series of comments Trump allegedly made about turning Canada into America’s ’51st state’.<\/p>\n

On 20 February, he tweeted, ‘You can\u2019t take our country, and you can\u2019t take our game’, in response to his country’s victory over the US during a 4 Nations Face-Off Championship Hockey Game. Trudeau’s statement was subsequently interpreted as a damning political statement.<\/p>\n

Carney – who will be officially sworn in as Canadian PM in the coming days – has since picked up where Trudeau left off, and is urging his country to stand strong against Trump’s wishes.<\/p>\n

While Trudeau previously described the battle between the US and Canada as ‘two friends fighting’, Carney described America as a country that he ‘could no longer trust’.<\/p>\n

The ex Bank Of England boss addressed escalating tariff-related tensions during a bold speech, in which he accused the 78-year-old Republican of ‘attacking Canadian families’.<\/p>\n

Carney also accused Trump of planning to ‘destroy the Canadian way of life’, while describing his trade plans as one of the ‘greatest crises of our lifetime’.<\/p>\n

“There is someone who is trying to weaken our economy: Donald Trump,” Carney began.<\/p>\n

“Donald Trump has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, sell and how we make a living.”<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the address, the Canadian PM explained that he and his advisors will soon have to negotiate with Trump, ahead of the POTUS possibly introducing additional tariffs that would affect his country’s economy.<\/p>\n

“The Canadian government has rightly retaliated with tariffs. We will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect,” Carney continued.<\/p>\n

“We did not ask for this fight. But Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.”<\/p>\n

He added: “Make no mistake, Canada will win.”<\/p>\n

“We have made this the greatest country in the world and now our neighbours want to take us. No way,” he went on.<\/p>\n

“We can\u2019t change Donald Trump \u2026 [but] because we\u2019re masters in our own home, we can control our economic destiny.”<\/p>\n
