WASHINGTON \u2014\u00a0President Trump threatened massive sanctions against Russia on Friday over its\u00a0continued attacks on Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0as he attempts to broker a cease-fire\u00a0in the more than three-year war between the nations.<\/p>\n

\u201cBased on the fact that Russia is absolutely \u2018pounding\u2019 Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,\u201d\u00a0Trump wrote<\/a>\u00a0on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

Trump, 78, has\u00a0sought to pressure both sides to the table to end the war and his aides are due to meet next week with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said Thursday the\u00a0parties would be\u00a0discussing plans for a cease-fire<\/a>\u00a0after Washington paused military aid and intelligence sharing with Kyiv.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was asked to leave the White House last Friday after\u00a0an Oval Office argument<\/a>\u00a0in which Trump faulted him for, among other things, being skeptical of the value of a temporary cease-fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t just speak about\u00a0cease-fire\u00a0and speak and speak. It will not work,\u201d Zelensky said at that meeting, citing Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s record of broken agreements and fear of future attacks.<\/p>\n

Trump told him: \u201cLook, if you could get a\u00a0cease-fire\u00a0right now, I tell you you\u2019d take it, so the bullets stop flying and your men stop getting killed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US president argues that a pending framework pact that would grant America a 50% stake in Ukraine\u2019s rare-earth minerals would effectively give Kyiv security guarantees through the presence of mining personnel.<\/p>\n

France and the UK also plan to deploy peacekeeping troops when fighting ends to shield against future incursions.<\/p>\n

Former President Joe Biden progressively increased economic pressure on Russia to halt the war but didn\u2019t move to sanction oil exports until 10 days before he\u00a0left office.<\/p>\n

Biden also didn\u2019t sanction many of Moscow\u2019s oligarchs, including\u00a0a pair of billionaires<\/a>\u00a0who shopped for US property with his son Hunter Biden during the Obama-Biden administration.<\/p>\n
