Prince Harry and Prince William\u2019s surnames underwent a change after their respective marriages, and it’s left people wanting to know more about how royal names work.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Royal Family<\/a>\u00a0do enjoy changing their surnames around, and while it can be confusing to us common folk, there\u2019s a good reason for it.<\/p>\n

For instance, after\u00a0Meghan Markle<\/a>\u00a0corrected Mindy Kaling when talking about her surname, a lot of people were surprised.<\/p>\n

The former\u00a0Suits\u00a0<\/em>star appeared on her brand-new\u00a0Netflix<\/a>\u00a0cooking and homemaking show and explained that\u00a0her last name is Sussex<\/a>\u00a0because of her title, the Duchess of Sussex.<\/p>\n

For many people around the\u00a0world<\/a>, they were not aware that her name had changed to that of her title, or the reason why this happens, so it came as a bit of a shock.<\/p>\n

Similarly, a lot of folks aren\u2019t in the know about\u00a0Harry<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0William\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0surname.<\/p>\n

While you might have thought it was Mountbatten-Windsor, because of their grandparents, they actually had a totally different name while serving in the\u00a0UK<\/a>\u00a0military.<\/p>\n

When the pair were in their 20s, they chose to take the last name \u2018Wales\u2019 as\u00a0King Charles III<\/a>\u00a0was the Prince of Wales at the time.<\/p>\n

It appears that royals will use their parents’ surnames – which are based on their official titles – until they are given their own.<\/p>\n

So, this is why Harry\u2019s is now Sussex, as he is the Duke of Sussex, and William has remained Wales, as he is the new Prince of Wales.<\/p>\n

Born William Arthur Philip Louis, you can see how a surname is omitted, and on any official paperwork, he would sign himself off as His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis.<\/p>\n

Chosen by his mother, the late\u00a0Princess Diana<\/a>, his name has a wonderful meaning.<\/p>\n

In the 1992 book\u00a0Diana: Her Story<\/em>, it was revealed that Diana declined King Charles III\u2019s picks for their sons.<\/p>\n

Prince William also used a different surname (Samir Hussein\/WireImage)<\/cite><\/div>\n

The book stated that when she was asked who chose Harry\u2019s name, she said: “I did… chose William and Harry, but Charles did the rest.”<\/p>\n

She claimed that Charles had wanted to name them Albert and Arthur, but Diana believed those names to be \u2018too old\u2019.<\/p>\n

Prince Harry was born Henry Charles Albert David, which has shocked a lot of people.<\/p>\n

I mean, where\u2019s the Harry in that namesake?<\/p>\n

Well, English tradition says that men named Henry have been nicknamed ‘Harry’ and\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to Metro, Henry VIII was known as ‘Harry’ by his mates.<\/p>\n

However, even\u00a0Prince Harry doesn\u2019t know why he wasn\u2019t called Harry<\/a>\u00a0to begin with if he was to go on being called it.<\/p>\n

Speaking previously with a child named Henry at the WellChild Awards, he told the kid –\u00a0as per<\/a>\u00a0Entertainment Tonight: “My name is Henry as well. But everyone calls me Harry.”<\/p>\n

He went on to share: “I have no idea why.”<\/p>\n

His proper title was used in Harry’s engagement to Meghan which was announced in November 2017.<\/p>\n

The official palace statement read at the time: “His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle Are Engaged to Be Married.”<\/p>\n

This whole royal surname thing is very interesting.<\/p>\n
