President Donald Trump appeared in front of Congress on Tuesday (4 March) where he discussed his key objectives for his second presidency.<\/p>\n

Trump<\/a>\u00a0delivered the 90-minute address in a joint session, discussing everything he had achieved so far in office and what his plans are moving forward.<\/p>\n

He also\u00a0spoke about DOGE<\/a>\u00a0– with a special mention to\u00a0Elon Musk<\/a>\u00a0– trade tariffs and the\u00a0situation in Ukraine<\/a>. But some viewers were surprised to see that Trump also had a message for the people of\u00a0Greenland<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n

In fact, viewers were alarmed when Trump spoke about gaining control of the island, with many calling Trump’s comments ‘a threat’.\u00a0Have a listen here:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The mineral-rich island is a territory of Denmark and is located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.<\/p>\n

During the address, Trump said: “And I also have a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland. We strongly support your right to determine your own future.<\/p>\n

“And if you choose, we welcome you into the\u00a0United States of America<\/a>. We need Greenland for national security and even international security. And we\u2019re working with everybody involved to try and get it. But we need it really for international world security. And I think we\u2019re going to get it \u2014 one way or the other, we\u2019re going to get it.<\/p>\n

“We will keep you safe. We will make you rich. And together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before. It\u2019s a very small population but very, very large piece of land and very, very important for military security.”<\/p>\n

In a clip of the comments, people were pretty taken aback, with one person writing: “Is that a threat?”<\/p>\n

While another said: “No thanks. Leave Greenland alone.” And a third added: “What does that mean… one way or another.”<\/p>\n

Greenlandic Prime Minister M\u00fate Bourup Egede has since spoken out following the comments, writing a post in Greenlandic and Danish on Facebook.<\/p>\n

According\u00a0to<\/a>\u00a0Time, the post claimed that Greenland’s citizens are Greenlandic, not American or Danish.<\/p>\n

He also said that the future of Greenland would be decided by its own people.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen, said that he didn’t think the people of Greenland wanted to separate from Denmark to join the US.<\/p>\n

He added that Trump’s comments about the island’s right to choose its future was ‘the most important part of that speech’.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very optimistic about what will be a Greenlandic decision about this. They want to loosen their ties to Denmark, we\u2019re working on that, to have a more equal relationship,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
