A spokesperson for the UK government has shared a statement in response to Donald Trump’s decision to pause of military aid to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s all gone a bit t*ts up on the\u00a0global<\/a>\u00a0political stage. What was intended to be a routine visit from Ukrainian President\u00a0Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a>\u00a0to the White House to sign a minerals agreement with the US went horribly, horribly wrong after the pair ended up having a\u00a0public bust-up in the Oval Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The following days have seen numerous European countries reaffirm their support for Zelenskyy, amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country, while\u00a0President Trump<\/a>\u00a0and his ‘first buddy’\u00a0Elon Musk<\/a>\u00a0decided to call out the Ukrainian leader on\u00a0social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Not content with accusing Zelenskyy of ‘gambling with WW3’, Trump has now announced the decision to\u00a0pause all military aid to Ukraine<\/a>, with a White House aid insisting the decision will secure peace between the two nations.<\/p>\n

“President [Trump] has been clear that he is focused on peace,” White House official anonymously\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0Sky News.<\/p>\n

“We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that is contributing to a solution.”<\/p>\n

The UK government has now responded to the latest development, with a spokesperson telling Sky News that ministers are ‘absolutely committed’ to achieving piece in\u00a0Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“We remain absolutely committed to securing a lasting peace in Ukraine and are engaging with key allies in support of this effort,” a\u00a0UK<\/a>\u00a0government spokesperson has said.<\/p>\n

“It is the right thing to do, and is in our interest to do so.”<\/p>\n

The spokesperson went on to reference the UK government’s recent decision to provide further military aid to Ukraine, which includes an annual\u00a0\u00a33 billion<\/a>\u00a0for ‘as long as it takes’ as well as releasing \u00a32.26 billion from frozen Russian assets in the form of a loan.<\/p>\n

Emphasising the support is to guarantee Ukraine will be in a position to negotiate peace with\u00a0Russia<\/a>, the spokesperson added: “In addition, we’ve set up a partnership with Ukraine that allows them to use \u00a31.6 billion of UK export finance to buy 5,000 air defence missile manufactured in Belfast, putting Ukraine in the strongest possible position for peace.”<\/p>\n

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has also addressed the shocking development in a new interview,\u00a0telling<\/a>\u00a0BBC Radio 4 that the PM is ‘laser-focused’ on achieving peace.<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s laser-focused on getting peace. He won\u2019t be derailed by announcements,” she said.<\/p>\n

“He will continue that dialogue with our oldest and strongest ally, the US, and with European partners and with Ukraine.”<\/p>\n

The US president’s decision to pause military aid will come as a huge blow to Ukraine, with former President Biden giving the Eastern European country $66.5 billion (\u00a352.3 billion) since Russia invaded on 24 February 2022.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0from The New York Times adds that $1 billion (\u00a3787.3 million) in arms and ammunition have now been withheld by the US, meaning that Ukraine will now have to negotiate with private contractors.<\/p>\n
