Susan Cronshaw says her daughter Jess struggled with hyperemesis gravidarum so severely that it led to the loss of her life \u2014 and that of her 4-day-old baby<\/p>\n

A UK woman whose daughter took her own life while struggling with\u00a0severe pregnancy sickness<\/a>\u00a0is saying that no one took the illness seriously \u2014\u00a0and if one person had helped her daughter \u201cit would have changed the outcome altogether.\u201d<\/p>\n

Susan Cronshaw said he\u2019s sharing her daughter Jess Cronshaw\u2019s story because \u201cI wouldn\u2019t want anybody to feel how Jess did. She felt like no one was listening \u2014 and they weren\u2019t. It felt like you were just pushed from pillar to post. There was nobody taking it and being in charge of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her 26-year-old daughter, Susan told\u00a0ITV News<\/a>, had been diagnosed with\u00a0hyperemesis gravidarum\u00a0<\/a>(HG), an extreme version of pregnancy sickness with which\u00a0Kate Middleton<\/a>\u00a0famously struggled<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The debilitating condition causes extreme nausea and vomiting, the\u00a0Cleveland Clinic<\/a>\u00a0says, often leading to weight loss and dehydration. It can be managed with prescription medication at home but in extreme cases requires patients to be hospitalized and given IVs.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe couldn\u2019t drink, she couldn\u2019t eat, her weight was dropping off her. Her skin was white. She just wasn\u2019t Jess,\u201d Susan said. And as Jess herself said \u2014 in a tearful voice memo to a friend, \u201cHonestly it\u2019s, like, the hardest thing I\u2019ve ever gone through in my life. The constant nausea, there\u2019s no relief from it. I just spend my days in bed. It\u2019s just horrible,” Jess said.<\/p>\n

No one recognized just how sick her daughter was, Susan says, sharing that Jess was given an anti-nausea medication \u2014\u00a0but then advised not to take it because it could harm her baby.<\/p>\n

In November, 2022, Jess was 28 weeks pregnant when she took her own life. Her daughter Elsie was delivered via C-section, but died four days later.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had her christened,\u201d Susan says. \u201cShe got reunited with her mom \u2026 there\u2019s no words I can give you. Just heartbroke. Living my life now feels like I\u2019m lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

An inquest into Jess\u2019s death concluded that \u201cfeeling unheard\u201d contributed to \u201cthe deterioration of her mental health,\u201d and that she was give \u201cincorrect\u201d guidance to stop the anti-nausea medication. The inquest also noted that Jess had \u201cnot been referred to any mental health service or support.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s all it would have [taken], one individual to do something for Jess, and it would have changed the outcome altogether,\u201d Susan said. \u201cI know that, and I live with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

A\u00a0Just Giving<\/a>\u00a0fundraiser for the UK\u2019s Pregnancy Sickness Support organization has been established in Jess\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all miss you everyday Jess and there isn\u2019t a day that goes by where we don\u2019t cherish the precious memories we had the honour of making with you,\u201d the fundraiser says. \u201cWe hope we are doing you both proud by continuing to pursue much needed change in the health care system, whilst navigating our grief so no expectant mother suffering with HG experiences what Jess did.
