A lip reader has weighed in on Demi Moore’s reaction after\u00a0The Substance<\/em>\u00a0star missed out on winning Best Actress at the Oscars.<\/p>\n

Moore<\/a>\u00a0was favoured to win by many prior to last night’s (2 March) ceremony, with her role as Elisabeth Sparkle in body horror\u00a0The Substance<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>receiving universal acclaim and seeing the 62-year-old win a Golden Globe for the role.<\/p>\n

However, the bookies were proved wrong as the award ultimately went to 25-year-old Mikey Madison.<\/p>\n

Moore’s immediate reaction to the loss was caught on camera, leading many to try and decipher what the\u00a0actress<\/a>\u00a0said after Madison’s name was read out.<\/p>\n

Lip reader Nicola Hickling has now weighed in on the debate,\u00a0revealing<\/a>\u00a0to MailOnline what she believed Moore said immediately after losing out.<\/p>\n

“Demi says ‘nice’ but she isn’t smiling when she says it. Her body is almost nodding like she had to force herself to say it,” she told the outlet.<\/p>\n

Fans were also disappointed to see Moore miss out on the chance to take home a\u00a0Best Actress gong<\/a>, with many even comparing the decision to\u00a0The Substance<\/em>‘s plot. For those who missed the body horror flick, Moore’s character begins taking a black market de-aging substance after being cast out of\u00a0Hollywood<\/a>\u00a0for her age.<\/p>\n

“Demi Moore losing Best Actress to a younger, hotter actress is literally what The Substance is about. Crazy,” one user commented on\u00a0social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Demi Moore was absolutely snubbed and you\u2019ll NEVER change my mind. The Oscars just proved square and fair they don\u2019t take older women seriously and they don\u2019t take Horror seriously,” a second viewer penned, while a third simply added: “Demi Moore robbed.”<\/p>\n

Moore could later be seen applauding Madison for her win (ABC)<\/cite><\/div>\n

While Moore appeared disappointed to have lost out initially, the actress put her feelings aside and could be seen applauding for Madison as she made her way onto the stage to collect the award.<\/p>\n

Madison took home the award for her role in\u00a0Anora,\u00a0<\/em>Sean Baker’s romantic comedy film which tells the story Anora Mikheeva, a young stripper who controversially marries the son of a\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0Oligarch.<\/p>\n

The actress paid homage to the sex worker community during her acceptance speech, telling the audience: “I also just want to, again, recognise and honour the sex worker community. I will. Yes. I will continue to support and be an ally.<\/p>\n

“All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community has been one of the highlights of this incredible experience.”<\/p>\n

Anora\u00a0<\/em>was\u00a0<\/em>one of the biggest success stories of the night, with the film also scooping up five out of the six awards it was nominated for \u2014 including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.<\/p>\n

The film featured a mostly Russian cast, with Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Darya Ekamasova and Aleksei Serebryakov also starring.<\/p>\n

The gong instead went to\u00a0How Green Was My Valley,\u00a0<\/em>which it\u2019s fair to say has not stood the test of time to quite the same extent.<\/p>\n

To add insult to injury, Welles had a falling out with the Academy prior to the ceremony, and the audience booed every time his name was mentioned.<\/p>\n

Citizen Kane\u00a0<\/em>was nominated for nine Academy Awards, but only took home the statuette for Best Original Screenplay.<\/p>\n

Even Richard Attenborough, who ended up winning Best Picture for his biopic\u00a0Gandhi<\/em>, thought Steven Spielberg\u2019s\u00a0E.T.\u00a0<\/em>should have won.<\/p>\n

He is quoted in Joseph McBride\u2019s\u00a0Steven Spielberg: A Biography\u00a0<\/em>as saying of the moment his win was announced: \u201cI didn\u2019t go to the podium, I went over to Spielberg. He got up, I put my arms round him, and I said, \u2018This isn\u2019t right, this should be yours’.”<\/p>\n

Spielberg\u2019s tale of the bond between a lonely child and a horrifying looking alien remains one of the most beloved films of all time, absolutely dominating the box office following its 1982 release<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, one fan admitted they were \u2018blown away to find out that the movie didn’t win a single Academy Award\u2019 on Reddit.<\/p>\n

This has since been chalked up to the sinister machinations of Harvey Weinstein, who Den of Geek\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0started a \u2018whisper campaign\u2019 claiming the only good part of\u00a0Saving Private Ryan\u00a0<\/em>was the first 20 minutes, with the rest being \u2018sentimental hokum\u2019.<\/p>\n

DreamWorks marketer Terry Press recalls Spielberg telling him \u2018I do not want to get down in the mud with Harvey\u2019 when he was urged to fight back amid Weinstein\u2019s bullish campaign tactics.<\/p>\n

Director Ang Lee\u00a0claimed<\/a>\u00a0in a 2024 Deadline interview that support for his tragic gay love story \u2018had a ceiling\u2019 amid the Academy of the time.<\/p>\n

He even recalls being told to stay in the wings of the stage in-between his Best Director win and the announcement of Best Picture, being told by a stage manager: \u201cEverybody assumes you will win.\u201d<\/p>\n
