We’re only minutes into this year’s Academy Awards, and already, host Conan O’Brien has divided viewers.<\/p>\n

Following a\u00a0joint performance from\u00a0Wicked\u00a0<\/em>actors Ariana Grande and Cynthia Eviro<\/a>, the presenter appeared in a VT crawling out of the dishevelled body of Demi Moore – a scene made famous in\u00a0Oscar-nominated horror\u00a0The Substance<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite the gory moment, some viewers seemingly couldn’t get enough.<\/p>\n

“Conan O’Brien walking out of Demi Moore’s body is a stroke of old-school genius. I love everything,” one gushed on social media.<\/p>\n

Another continued: “Conan already killing it. #Oscars<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

“What a perfect start from Conan lol,” a third fan added.<\/p>\n

“Conan O\u2019Brien coming out of Demi\u2019s back in\u00a0The Substance<\/em>\u00a0is god tier,” another wrote.<\/p>\n

As we say, however, the skit hasn’t gone down too well with all viewers watching from home.<\/p>\n

“The oscars did not need to introduce Conan that way,” one wrote.<\/p>\n

Another continued: “Conan coming out the back of Demi wtf lmao”.<\/p>\n

In another lengthy response, one critic hit out: “Fingers crossed Conan is able to salvage this horrible opening to the Oscars.<\/p>\n

“I hope you can wake the audience up before we all shut this off and just go to sleep.”<\/p>\n

Orson Welles\u2019 epic tale of the rise and fall of a media baron topped BFI\u2019s\u00a0Sight & Sound\u00a0<\/em>poll of the best films ever made for 40 years, but this apparently wasn\u2019t enough to win an Academy Award.<\/p>\n

The gong instead went to\u00a0How Green Was My Valley,\u00a0<\/em>which it\u2019s fair to say has not stood the test of time to quite the same extent.<\/p>\n

To add insult to injury, Welles had a falling out with the Academy prior to the ceremony, and the audience booed every time his name was mentioned.<\/p>\n

Citizen Kane\u00a0<\/em>was nominated for nine Academy Awards, but only took home the statuette for Best Original Screenplay.<\/p>\n

E.T. did not go home with any Oscars (Universal)<\/cite><\/div>\n

Even Richard Attenborough, who ended up winning Best Picture for his biopic\u00a0Gandhi<\/em>, thought Steven Spielberg\u2019s\u00a0E.T.\u00a0<\/em>should have won.<\/p>\n

He is quoted in Joseph McBride\u2019s\u00a0Steven Spielberg: A Biography\u00a0<\/em>as saying of the moment his win was announced: \u201cI didn\u2019t go to the podium, I went over to Spielberg. He got up, I put my arms round him, and I said, \u2018This isn\u2019t right, this should be yours’.”<\/p>\n

Spielberg\u2019s tale of the bond between a lonely child and a horrifying looking alien remains one of the most beloved films of all time, absolutely dominating the box office following its 1982 release<\/p>\n

The Shawshank Redemption\u00a0<\/em>loses to\u00a0Forrest Gump\u00a0<\/em>(1995)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Shawshank Redemption wasn’t that popular originally (Colombia)<\/cite><\/div>\n

While both of these films are pretty much universally adored,\u00a0The Shawshank Redemption\u00a0<\/em>still tops IMDb’s 250 highest rated list and is regularly cited as one of the greatest movies of all time.<\/p>\n

While in hindsight, the fact the film failed to win any of the seven Oscars it was nominated for is pretty odd,\u00a0The Shawshank Redemption\u00a0<\/em>was a box office bomb, and in the year of its release was massively overshadowed by\u00a0Forrest Gump\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Pulp Fiction.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, one fan admitted they were \u2018blown away to find out that the movie didn’t win a single Academy Award\u2019 on Reddit.<\/p>\n

In yet another upset for Steven Spielberg, his epic World War Two drama lost out to romcom\u00a0Shakespeare in Love.<\/em><\/p>\n

This has since been chalked up to the sinister machinations of Harvey Weinstein, who Den of Geek\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0started a \u2018whisper campaign\u2019 claiming the only good part of\u00a0Saving Private Ryan\u00a0<\/em>was the first 20 minutes, with the rest being \u2018sentimental hokum\u2019.<\/p>\n

DreamWorks marketer Terry Press recalls Spielberg telling him \u2018I do not want to get down in the mud with Harvey\u2019 when he was urged to fight back amid Weinstein\u2019s bullish campaign tactics.<\/p>\n

The following year saw another shock Best Picture upset, with the widely reviled\u00a0Crash\u00a0<\/em>triumphing over\u00a0Brokeback Mountain.<\/em><\/p>\n

A Reddit user called it \u2018truly the greatest robbery of all time\u2019.<\/p>\n

Director Ang Lee\u00a0claimed<\/a>\u00a0in a 2024 Deadline interview that support for his tragic gay love story \u2018had a ceiling\u2019 amid the Academy of the time.<\/p>\n

He even recalls being told to stay in the wings of the stage in-between his Best Director win and the announcement of Best Picture, being told by a stage manager: \u201cEverybody assumes you will win.\u201d<\/p>\n
