Anora\u00a0<\/em>absolutely\u00a0<\/em>swept the 2025 Oscars and took home the top prize for Best Picture, with its director Sean Baker becoming the first person to win four Oscars in the same year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last night (March 2), the\u00a097th Academy Awards<\/a>\u00a0took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Anora\u00a0<\/em>– a\u00a0film<\/a>\u00a0about a stripper who lives in\u00a0Brooklyn<\/a>\u00a0– was up for six awards and won five of them for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Actress and Best Picture.<\/p>\n

Anora\u00a0<\/em>actor Yuriy Borisov lost out on the\u00a0Best Supporting Actor\u00a0<\/a>award, which went to Kieran Culkin for his role in\u00a0A Real Pain.<\/em><\/p>\n

Baker – who made history after picking up Oscars for editing, writing, directing and Best Picture –\u00a0thanked the Academy,<\/a>\u00a0his team alongside the ‘of course, incredible, incredible cast’ from Mikey Madison to all involved, complimenting them for ‘elevating everything’ he wrote.<\/p>\n

He continued: “I want to thank the sex worker community – they have shared their stories, they have shared their life experiences with me over the years. My deepest respect, thank you, I share this with you.”<\/p>\n

During her acceptance speech for Best Actress – which marks her first Academy Award – Madison said she’d ‘continue to support and be an ally’ to the sex worker community alongside noting how ‘honored’ she is to be ‘recognized’ alongside the rest of the nominees in the category.<\/p>\n

Baker\u00a0previously reflected to UNILAD<\/a>\u00a0he was slightly taken aback by the ‘universal love and support of’\u00a0Anora\u00a0<\/em>when it was first released.<\/p>\n

He told UNILAD: “I thought just the subject matter alone would cause the film to be a little more divisive […] so that’s encouraging.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my fifth film that covers the subject matter so each time I do it, it’s another individual story that shows a different aspect of sex work but hopefully done in a way that allows audiences to connect with the main character – have empathy for the main character. And remove, or hopefully help remove, the unfair stigma [surrounding the adult industry].”<\/p>\n

Baker was quick to note the themes ‘tackled in the film are really presented to the audience in a way that is left up for interpretation’.<\/p>\n

“I think people can apply their own histories to these things, their own\u00a0politics<\/a>,” he said. “I think that’s part of why I wanted to make this film – to spark discussion.”<\/p>\n
