When we think of controversial Oscar moments, naturally our minds are drawn to some pretty pivotal moments.<\/p>\n

The speech that got\u00a0Pretty Woman<\/em>\u00a0actor\u00a0Richard Gere banned from the gala<\/a>\u00a0for two decades may be the first thing you think of.<\/p>\n

Or maybe it\u2019s Martin Scorsese losing the Best Director award to Kevin Costner in 1991?<\/p>\n

Perhaps\u00a0Angelina Jolie planting a kiss on the lips of her brother<\/a>\u00a0James Haven Vought?<\/p>\n

For many it will be the explosive moment that took place at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022;\u00a0The Slap Heard Around the World.<\/a><\/p>\n

At Los Angeles\u2019 Dolby Theatre on March 27, 2022, nominated actor\u00a0Will Smith<\/a>, 56, smacked Chris Rock, 60,\u00a0after he made a joke<\/a>\u00a0about his wife,\u00a0Jada Pinkett Smith<\/a>, 53.<\/p>\n

Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia, or hair loss, was called out at the\u00a0Oscars<\/a>\u00a0by Rock.<\/p>\n

He claimed he couldn\u2019t \u2018wait to see\u2019 her starring in a sequel to 1997\u2019s\u00a0G.I. Jane<\/em><\/a>\u00a0because of her shaved head.<\/p>\n

The comedian, who was presenting the award for Best Documentary Feature, noticed Smith was coming towards him.<\/p>\n

After storming on stage, Smith slapped Rock before returning to his seat, where he continued to shout profanities at him.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0the heated exchange<\/a>, the Best Documentary Award was handed over to the crew of\u00a0Summer of Soul<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Smith, who continued to participate in the 2022 Oscars ceremony, was later presented the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Venus and Serena Williams\u2019 father in\u00a0King Richard<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The following day, Smith issued a formal apology via Instagram and Facebook, referring to his behaviour as \u2018unacceptable\u2019 and \u2018inexcusable.<\/p>\n

Days after he resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), officials revealed the\u00a0Bright<\/em>\u00a0favourite would be banned from attending the Oscars or any other Academy event for the next ten years.<\/p>\n

In response to the Academy\u2019s decision, Smith released a seven-word statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI accept and respect the Academy’s decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

53-year-old Pinkett-Smith and the\u00a0Bad Boys<\/em>\u00a0star have been married since 1997, having met on the set of\u00a0The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air<\/em>\u00a0in 1994.<\/p>\n

In 2023, the\u00a0Cleopatra<\/em>\u00a0actress revealed on an episode of the now-defunct Red Table Talk that she and\u00a0her husband had been separated for six years<\/a>\u00a0at the time of the Oscars altercation.<\/p>\n

Over a year later, Pinkett Smith claimed the incident saved their marriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI call it the \u2018holy slap\u2019 now because so many positive things came after it,\u201d she told Daily Mail\u2019s YOU Magazine in December 2023.<\/p>\n
