In the middle of delivering remarks at a meeting of the National Governors Association, Trump called Janet Mills out after the group that oversees high school sports in Maine said it would defy Trump\u2019s executive order barring female transgender athletes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m complying with state and federal law,\u201d Mills responded.<\/p>\n
In its decision to ignore Trump\u2019s order, Maine\u2019s athletic governing body had cited a state anti-discrimination law.
\nTrump, glaring into the audience from a podium, countered with a threat: \u201cWe are the federal law. You better do it, because you\u2019re not gonna get any federal funding at all if you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBy the way, your population, even though it\u2019s somewhat liberal\u2026 doesn\u2019t want men playing in women\u2019s sports,\u201d the president added, while the rest of the governors gathered in the room watched on.<\/p>\n
Trump told her the legal battle would be a \u201creal easy one,\u201d and added: \u201cEnjoy your life after governor, because I don\u2019t think you\u2019ll be in elected politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
The fiery exchange, which was broadcast live on CSPAN, went viral on social media, drawing praise from the president\u2019s critics.<\/p>\n
