Axios will obey President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the \u201cGulf of America,\u201d the publication said in a statement Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOur top priority at Axios is to provide readers with clinical, fact-based reporting,\u201d Axios\u00a0said in a statement.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cOur standard is to use \u2018Gulf of America (renamed by U.S. from Gulf of Mexico)\u2019 in our reporting because our audience is mostly U.S.-based compared to other publishers with international audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

After taking office last month, Trump signed an executive order changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the \u201cGulf of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Gulf of America \u2015 what a beautiful name,\u201d Trump\u00a0said during a news conference<\/a>\u00a0in early January. \u201cAnd it\u2019s appropriate. We do most of the work there. It\u2019s ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Following the order, the Federal Aviation Administration announced it\u00a0would be changing the name<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cGulf of America\u201d in all future charts and maps. And tech giants\u00a0Google and Apple also announced<\/a>\u00a0they would change the name.<\/p>\n

The Associated Press\u00a0has been barred from White House access<\/a>\u00a0after the publication made clear it would not adhere to the name change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt is alarming that the Trump administration would punish AP for its independent journalism,\u201d Julie Pace, the executive editor of AP,\u00a0said in a statement<\/a>\u00a0earlier this week. \u201cLimiting our access to the Oval Office based on the content of AP\u2019s speech not only severely impedes the public\u2019s access to independent news, it plainly violates the First Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
