There is a specific reason why only certain users will see Gulf of Mexico\u2019s name change on Google Maps.<\/p>\n

In case you missed it, President Donald Trump\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0at his inauguration that he would be changing the name of the\u00a0Gulf of Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a move that many aren\u2019t sure who exactly asked for, the body of water will now be known as the Gulf of America.<\/p>\n

And\u00a0Google<\/a>\u00a0has revealed that it will be\u00a0following the change<\/a>\u00a0made in an executive order by the president.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0tech<\/a>\u00a0giant confirmed that if the US government updated its official maps, then Google would follow suit.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Google said: \u201cIn the US, the Geographic Names Information System has officially updated \u2018Gulf of Mexico\u2019 to \u2018Gulf of America\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we announced two weeks ago and consistent with our longstanding practices, we\u2019ve begun rolling out changes to reflect this update.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump celebrated the change on Truth Social, writing: \u201cGULF OF AMERICA!\u201d<\/p>\n

However, this will only affect Google Maps users in the US, for everyone else in the world, things will stay the same. Why?<\/p>\n

Ahead of this change,\u00a0Mexico<\/a>\u00a0asked Google not to, arguing that the US has no legal right to rename the water body, citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.<\/p>\n

Previously speaking to the press, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said: \u201cIf a country wants to change the designation of something in the sea, it would only apply up to 12 nautical miles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt cannot apply to the rest, in this case, the Gulf of Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also joked that she was thinking about renaming North America to \u2018Mexican America\u2019, adding: \u201cBy the way, we are also going to ask for Mexican America to appear on the map.\u201d<\/p>\n

As far back as 1590, North America was known as Mexican America.<\/p>\n

Because the name of the gulf is disputed between the countries, \u2018Gulf of America\u2019 will only be shown to users in the US.<\/p>\n

For Mexican users, they will see \u2018Gulf of Mexico\u2019 and anyone else will see \u2018Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)\u2019.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time that Google has added additional names or used different names for one location.<\/p>\n

The body of water between\u00a0Saudi Arabia and Iran<\/a>\u00a0has been a point of contention for decades.<\/p>\n

In Iran, it appears on Google Maps as the \u2018Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf)\u2019 but in other Arab countries near the location, it\u2019s labeled as the \u2018Arabian Gulf\u2019.<\/p>\n
