Donald Trump has already signed a flurry of executive orders in the first 24 hours of being sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.<\/p>\n

After taking the reigns from outgoing leader\u00a0Joe Biden<\/a>, the 78-year-old Republican leader wasted no time in\u00a0signing off several executive orders<\/a>, including one which states there are\u00a0‘only two genders’<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What are executive orders?<\/h2>\n

In short, executive orders are legally-binding written orders to the federal\u00a0government<\/a>\u00a0that do not require congressional approval.<\/p>\n

Presidents often issue orders to cancel the orders of their predecessors and\u00a0Trump<\/a>\u00a0was no exception as he rescinded 78 orders and actions signed by his Democrat predecessor, Biden.<\/p>\n

Many of Trump’s measures are likely to draw Democratic opposition.<\/p>\n

What has Trump said about the LGBTQ+ community?<\/h2>\n

“As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the\u00a0United States<\/a>\u00a0government that there are only two genders, male and female,” Trump said during his inaugural address.<\/p>\n

The policy reads, in part: “Agencies will cease pretending that men can be women and women can be men when enforcing laws that protect against sex discrimination.<\/p>\n

“These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”<\/p>\n

The order will also bring to an end ‘wasteful’ government programmes which promote diversity and inclusivity, as well as ‘defending women from gender ideology extremism’.<\/p>\n

What does Trump’s order mean for\u00a0<\/strong>the LGBTQ+ community?<\/h2>\n

Prior to Monday’s ceremony (20 January), Trump promised to order all federal agencies to end programmes that ‘promote \u2026 gender transition at any age’, and pledged to cut funding from hospitals providing\u00a0gender-affirming<\/a>\u00a0care.<\/p>\n

He also promised that federal law would rule that the US government not legally recognise trans people and rescind federal LGBTQ+ non-discrimination policies, like housing,\u00a0healthcare<\/a>\u00a0and employment.<\/p>\n

Trump, who has also called for new credentialing for teachers to ‘promote positive education about the nuclear family, the roles of mothers and fathers’,\u00a0as per<\/a> the Guardian, has five children with three different women.<\/p>\n
