Sheinelle Jones, the third-hour co-host of \u201cToday,\u201d\u00a0revealed on Wednesday<\/a>\u00a0that she is taking an extended break from\u00a0the morning show<\/a>\u00a0to handle a family health matter. Now, new details have emerged about her absence.<\/p>\n

The journalist, 46, did not disclose the nature of the issue, but a source close to Jones told\u00a0People<\/a>\u00a0the situation is \u201cserious.\u201d<\/p>\n

The health matter does not concern Jones or her and husband Uche Ojeh\u2019s three children: 14-year-old Kayin and 12-year-old twins Clara and Uche.<\/p>\n

\u201cSheinelle appreciates the support she\u2019s received from fans and viewers in her absence,\u201d the source told the outlet. \u201cShe\u2019s especially grateful for her tight-knit\u00a0\u2018Today\u2019\u00a0show family and co-hosts, for all their love during a sensitive time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones has been on\u00a0\u201cToday\u201d since 2014, co-hosting\u00a0\u201c3rd Hour of Today\u201d next to\u00a0Al Roker,\u00a0Craig Melvin\u00a0and\u00a0Dylan Dreyer. The reporter also fills in as co-anchor for\u00a0\u201cToday\u201d\u00a0and a guest co-host for\u00a0\u201cToday with Jenna & Friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her Wednesday\u00a0Instagram post<\/a>, Jones thanked viewers for their concern in the wake of her absence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI sincerely appreciate all of you who have reached out while I\u2019ve been absent from the show. I want to share with you that I\u2019m taking time to deal with a family health matter,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not lost on me how lucky I am to have not only the support of my\u00a0\u2018Today\u2019\u00a0show family, but to also have all of you,\u201d Jones added. \u201cYour kindness means so much to me. I\u2019ll see you soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her \u201cToday\u201d family showed their support in the comments section, with Savannah Guthrie writing, \u201cWe love you so. not the same without you. we will see you soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Craig Melvin, for his part, chimed in: \u201cWe all love you and we are so looking forward to having you back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rounding out the sweet sentiments, Jenna Bush Hager wrote, \u201cYou are a queen and are LOVED beyond measure! Wrapping our arms around you, always.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Jones released her statement, Guthrie, 53, read it on the air.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to share some news here about our friend Sheinelle. We know so many of you have been asking about Sheinelle and missing her and we miss her too,\u201d said the host.<\/p>\n

Jones has been noticeably missing from the show since Dec. 18 and did not attend\u00a0Hoda Kotb\u2019s monumental last show<\/a>\u00a0on Friday, Jan. 10.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot even a recorded piece from @SheinelleJones on the @TODAYshow for @hodakotb\u2019s last day?! Seems odd. Hope she\u2019s ok,\u201d one worried fan\u00a0wrote on X<\/a>, formerly Twitter, at the time.<\/p>\n

Despite her break from the program, Jones is set to\u00a0release\u00a0\u201cThrough Mom\u2019s Eyes<\/a>.\u201d The book is inspired by her\u00a0\u201cToday\u201d\u00a0segment where she interviews celebrities\u2019 mothers about raising successful kids.<\/p>\n

In August, the anchor said the memoir helped her learn things about her own mother.<\/p>\n
