\u201cI love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,\u201d the\u00a0American Idol<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>winner said in a statement to PEOPLE. \u201cI am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.\u201d<\/p>\n On Monday, Jan. 13, a Presidential Inaugural Committee spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE that Underwood is set to perform at the inauguration where Trump, 78, will be\u00a0sworn in as the next president of the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n Over the years, the “Before He Cheats” musician has kept her political views private.<\/p>\n In a 2019 interview with\u00a0The Guardian<\/em><\/a>, the Grammy winner said she felt that “more people try to pin me places politically.”<\/p>\n “I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins,” Underwood explained at the time. “It\u2019s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it\u2019s black and white. It\u2019s a discussion \u2014 a long discussion.”<\/p>\n Underwood’s participation in the inauguration comes more than seven years after she and fellow country star\u00a0Brad Paisley<\/a>\u00a0poked fun at Trump while hosting the 2017\u00a0Country Music Association Awards<\/a>\u00a0together.
