The scene is promptly disrupted when a nearly naked man painted blue emerges from a dinner plate surrounded by fruit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">As he begins singing, the drag queens break out into dance behind him.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">Conservative, Christian leaders say performance mocked &#8216;Last Supper&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">It wasn&#8217;t long until the scene prompted outcry from Christian and Conservative leaders in the United States who viewed its imagery as a mockery of &#8220;The Last Supper.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/cenacolovinciano.org\/en\/museum\/the-works\/the-last-supper-leonardo-da-vinci-1452-1519\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cenacolovinciano.org\/en\/museum\/the-works\/the-last-supper-leonardo-da-vinci-1452-1519\/\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">famous mural<\/a>\u00a0by Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci depicts Jesus Christ surrounded by his 12 apostles on the eve of his crucifixion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">As described in the Gospel, Jesus shares bread and wine with his gathered disciples, which he instructs them to eat and drink as his body and blood. On Sunday, Jolly appeared on\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/rmcsport.bfmtv.com\/jeux-olympiques\/ceremonie-d-ouverture-des-jo-thomas-jolly-et-daphne-burki-repondent-aux-critiques-de-jean-luc-melenchon_AV-202407280144.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">French TV station BFMTV<\/a>\u00a0to further insist that &#8220;The Last Supper&#8221; You will never find in me a desire to mock and denigrate anyone,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The idea was to create a big pagan party in link with the God of Mount Olympus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_mt\">What is the Festival of Dionysus?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In 5th century Athens, the\u00a0Festival of Dionysus came to be one of the pinnacle events of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Every year around springtime, playwrights would compete to entertain the masses of Athenian citizenry,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/Departments\/Joukowsky_Institute\/courses\/13things\/7411.html#:~:text=The%20Festival%20of%20Dionysus%2C%20otherwise,the%20masses%20of%20Athenian%20citizenry.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/Departments\/Joukowsky_Institute\/courses\/13things\/7411.html#:~:text=The%20Festival%20of%20Dionysus%2C%20otherwise,the%20masses%20of%20Athenian%20citizenry.\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">according to Brown University<\/a>. The festivities also included a procession from outside the city limits in which\u00a0the sacred statue of Dionysus was carried to a theater named for the god near the Acropolis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">While the Olympic ceremony performance could be said to depict one such celebration, some have even said the scene was reminiscent of not just Da Vinci&#8217;s work, but other works as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Among them is \u201c<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/musee-magnin.fr\/collection\/objet\/le-festin-des-dieux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">The Feast of the Gods<\/a>,&#8221; a 17th century painting from Dutch artist Jan van Bijlert depicting the Greek gods of Olympus crowded around a long table. On the contrary, I think (with) Thomas Jolly, we really did try to celebrate community tolerance,&#8221; Descamps said. \u201cLooking at the result of the polls that we shared, we believe that this ambition was achieved.
