The University of Georgia football player who\u00a0collided with a ref on the sideline<\/a>\u00a0and backed his team out of the red zone is feeling the heat from Dave Portnoy and Pat McAfee following the head-scratching mistake.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis f\u2013king guy,\u201d the Barstool Sports president\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0on X, with a video of the collision and two laughing emojis.<\/p>\n

Portnoy\u2019s comment came after a second quarter play that cost Georgia great field position during the Allstate Sugar Bowl Thursday night.<\/p>\n

The Bulldogs were in the second quarter of a scoreless game when quarterback Gunner Stockton dropped in a dime to wide receiver Arian Smith against Notre Dame\u2019s defense for a 67-yard gain.<\/p>\n

As a defender dragged Stockton down, the side judge, JB Garza, was hugging Georgia\u2019s sideline following the play downfield.<\/p>\n

However, Garza collided with Georgia redshirt\u00a0sophomore cornerback Parker Jones<\/a>, who was not suited up for the game and slightly crossed over the sideline in excitement.<\/p>\n

Garza flagged the play for interference, erasing the big gain and pushing Georgia\u2019s offense back 15 yards to the Fighting Irish\u2019s 26-yard line, leading to Bulldog\u2019s kicking a field goal.<\/p>\n

Portnoy wasn\u2019t the only one to pile onto the walk-on cornerback following the mistake.<\/p>\n

Retired NFL punter and ESPN analyst Pat McAfee also\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0on X that it\u2019s a \u201cTough time to be Parker Jones on the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the play, ESPN\u2019s play-by-play commentators\u00a0Sean McDonough and Greg McElroy noted how \u201cdevastating\u201d causing the penalty must have been for Jones.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s rules analyst Matt Austin also said, \u201cIf there\u2019s contact,\u201d a penalty is a \u201cgood call.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s dangerous down there. [The official] is running full speed to get to keep up with the play, to get a good spot. And if someone gets in his way and there\u2019s a collision, it\u2019s extremely dangerous, so yeah, that\u2019s a good call,\u201d Austin said.<\/p>\n

Though Jones is facing much criticism for the mistake, Georgia\u2019s head coach, Kirby Smart, appeared not even to realize the call was on one of his players at the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery unfortunate. We had a \u2014 I said a coach but I think it was a player, what I\u2019ve been told \u2014 in the white, and the white is reserved for the officials. That\u2019s a safety concern,\u201d he said during the post-game\u00a0press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the time, they\u2019ll grant you a warning on that, but it was a situation where it cost us 15 yards. We still had first-and-10 and didn\u2019t take advantage of it, but in the end, I call those things undisciplined, self-imposed wounds that you lose momentum on, so it\u2019s something you just can\u2019t have happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Notre Dame led Georgia 13-3 at halftime. At the third quarter\u2019s \u00a0opening, the Fighting Irish scored a kick-return touchdown to make it 20-3.<\/p>\n

The Irish would win the game 23-10 and will face off against Penn State in the Orange Bowl next Thursday.<\/p>\n
