The play in question occurred late in the fourth quarter<\/span>Credit: Getty Images \u2013 Getty<\/span><\/p>\n James Bradberry was called for a controversial holding penalty on JuJu Smith-Schuster<\/span>Credit: Getty<\/span><\/p>\n Some fans were outraged that such soft contact brought a crucial third-down penalty<\/span>Credit: FOX Sports<\/span> It gave the Chiefs \u2013 appearing in their third\u00a0Super Bowl\u00a0in four years \u2013 a famous win to add to their previous triumphs in 1969 and 2019.<\/p>\n However, one call from the officials late in the contest gave some fans reason to believe the game was \u201crigged.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The play in question came in the fourth quarter, with just 1:54 left on the clock.<\/p>\n Mahomes\u00a0and the Chiefs faced a 3rd-and-8 at the Eagles\u2019 15-yard line, with the score tied at 35-35.<\/p>\n MVP\u00a0Mahomes\u00a0looked for JuJu Smith-Schuster on the play, hoping to score a potentially game-winning touchdown.<\/p>\n But his pass was overthrown and incomplete, with the Chiefs facing a fourth down and having to get their defense back on the field.<\/p>\n The officials thought otherwise though, seeing a small tug on Smith-Schuster from\u00a0Eagles corner James Bradberry as the receiver looked to get out of his break.NFL Hall of Fame controversy after Chiefs legend who killed wife is nominated<\/p>\n That resulted in a controversial defensive holding penalty, effectively icing the game for the Chiefs by gifting them a new set of downs.<\/p>\n Mahomes and Co\u00a0worked the clock down to the final few seconds before kicking the game-winning FG.<\/p>\n Social media\u00a0erupted after the play, with some fans accusing the NFL of \u201ccheating\u201d by handing the game to the Chiefs.<\/p>\n Sharing\u00a0footage\u00a0of the play, one wrote: \u201cThis holding call here against the Eagles is proof that the NFL is rigged.\u201d<\/p>\n Another raged: \u201cThis is why I\u2019m not an NFL fan any more.\u201d<\/p>\n While a third said: \u201cNot the Chiefs cheating their way to a Super Bowl win.\u201d<\/p>\n And a fourth added: \u201cNo chance JuJu even reaches that ball. Awful call.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n However following the contest, Bradberry admitted that he had tugged Smith-Schuster\u2019s jersey during the early stages of the play.<\/p>\n He told reporters: \u201cI pulled on his jersey. They called it.<\/p>\n \u201cI was hoping they would let it ride.\u201d<\/p>\n And plenty of fans were in agreement, believing that the call was the correct one.<\/p>\n One wrote: \u201cBradberry holding Juju\u2019s jersey as he attempts to get out of his break. This is by rule a hold. The idea that the refs should have just ignored this because it\u2019s the Super Bowl is silly. Like it or not, it\u2019s the correct call.\u201d<\/p>\n Another responded: \u201cHe did pull the jersey in plain sight. It\u2019s the right call.
