{"id":15233,"date":"2024-11-28T18:46:04","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T18:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usdailys.com\/?p=15233"},"modified":"2024-11-28T18:46:04","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T18:46:04","slug":"breaking-taylor-swift-fans-are-leaving-x-for-bluesky-after-trumps-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usdailys.com\/?p=15233","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Taylor Swift Fans Are Leaving X for Bluesky After Trump\u2019s Election."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swifties say they\u2019re leaving X over Elon Musk\u2019s support of Donald Trump\u2014and the rhetoric that has erupted on the platform following Trump\u2019s win.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-22\">\n<p class=\"paywall\"><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Following the<\/span>US presidential election,\u00a0Swifties, the name for\u00a0Taylor Swift\u2019s fans, are fleeing X for\u00a0Bluesky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">X\u2019s owner, billionaire\u00a0Elon Musk, was one of Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0biggest backers, funneling\u00a0over $100 million into the Trump-supporting America PAC;\u00a0stumping for the candidate on the campaign trail; and\u00a0boosting Trump\u2019s messaging on X. Musk also helped Trump tap into a distinctly\u00a0right-wing male audience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.wired.com\/photos\/66473aa53086166974efd1e5\/191:100\/w_1280,c_limit\/GettyImages-2152656735.jpg\" alt=\"Taylor Swift | Latest News, Photos &amp; Videos | WIRED\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Swifties, who have built a robust community on the platform formerly known as Twitter, took notice. By Thursday, less than 48 hours after Trump won the presidency, they were starting to flock from the platform for good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI love the idea of building a new community here and would love not to have to support Elon in any way,\u201d says Justin, who goes by @justin-the-baron.swifties.social on Bluesky and asked to use only his first name for fear of harassment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cElon is of course a big Trump supporter, which doesn\u2019t align with Taylor\u2019s values or the values of Swifties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Though there are Swifties on all sides of the political spectrum, the community prides itself on being a positive and accepting space. After Kamala Harris was announced as the Democratic nominee for president, Swifties\u00a0began to mobilize to support her. In September, Swift herself endorsed Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In\u00a0an Instagram post\u00a0announcing her support, Swift cited\u00a0AI-generated images of herself and her fans that had been used by Trump to imply she\u2019d endorsed him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Following the endorsement, Musk\u00a0posted, \u201cFine Taylor \u2026 you win \u2026 I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life.\u201d Musk, who has repeatedly shared concerns about declining birth rates, has at least 11 children with at least three women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u00a0According to The New York Times<em>,<\/em>\u00a0he also offered his sperm to Nicole Shanahan, the former running mate for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (She declined.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Irene Kim, an organizer with\u00a0Swifties for Kamala, says that the outpouring of misogyny following the election pushed her and many other Swift fans to abandon X and seek refuge on Bluesky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Though research has found that\u00a0hate speech and disinformation increased\u00a0after Musk took over the platform, the election of Trump seems to have supercharged it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A\u00a0report\u00a0from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue found that in the 24 hours following Trump\u2019s electoral victory, phrases like \u201cYour body, my choice,\u201d parroting the\u00a0election night rhetoric of white supremacist Nick Fuentes, rose 4,600 percent on X.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-19\">\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI think that\u2019s the kind of rhetoric we want to get away from,\u201d Kim says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">She also notes that X\u2019s\u00a0recent update to the \u201cblock\u201d feature, which allows people to see the profile and posts of users that have blocked them, has contributed to a more negative experience on the platform. \u201cTwitter has definitely become such a hellscape,\u201d Kim says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Although Justin says he has been on Bluesky for more than a year, he mostly used X until this week. \u201cAfter the election, the timeline was full of Swifties getting DMs from Trump supporters threatening rape or sexual assault and making sexually violent comments gloating because Trump won,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>On Bluesky, however, both Justin and Kim say that they have noticed a tangible difference, feeling safer and more supported by the community itself. \u201cThe Swifties are here and I, for one, welcome our new overlords,\u201d\u00a0one user posted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cBluesky literally feels like a social media app again, where I\u2019m just connected with my community or like other interesting posts. I feel like people aren\u2019t as geared up to fight you,\u201d says Kim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Over the past 48 hours she has been hopping back to X to encourage people to migrate to Bluesky. \u201cWho knows if the momentum will keep up and everything will actually move over and stay there,\u201d she says, \u201cbut right now it just feels like such a breath of fresh air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As of this writing, there are nearly 200 Swift-themed\u00a0starter packs\u2014collections of accounts that Bluesky users can invite people to follow.
