Joe Rogan has responded to an attack from the chairman of the ABC who argued the podcaster was \u201cdeeply repulsive\u201d and took advantage of \u201cpeople\u2019s vulnerabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

ABC boss Kim Williams made the comments as his own organisation struggled with significant drops in audience figures.<\/p>\n

When asked about \u201cthe Rogan effect\u201d and how exactly the successful podcaster has managed to capture what has been dubbed \u201cthe bro-market\u201d in the US, Mr Williams did not pull his punches.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not a consumer or enthusiast about Mr Rogan and his work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201c(But) I think that people like Mr Rogan prey on people\u2019s vulnerabilities. They prey on fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey prey on anxiety. They prey on all of the elements that contribute to uncertainty in society, and they entrepreneur fantasy outcomes and conspiracy outcomes as being a normal part of social narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr William\u2019s diatribe didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n

\u201cI personally find it deeply repulsive \u2026 to think that someone has such remarkable power,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m also absolutely in dismay that this can be a source of public entertainment, when it\u2019s really treating the public as plunder for entrepreneurs that are really quite malevolent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rogan responded to the criticism overnight with a tweet on X. Sharing a clip of Mr Williams\u2019 rant, he said \u201cLOL WUT\u201d.<\/p>\n

Elon Musk shared Rogan\u2019s tweet and compared the ABC to a communist Russian newspaper.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the head of Australian government-funded media, their Pravda,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

The podcaster\u2019s endorsement of president-elect Donald Trump at the eleventh-hour of the US election, generated much debate about the power of new-age media formats.<\/p>\n

Rogan\u2019s podcast,\u00a0The Joe Rogan Experience<\/i>, is overwhelmingly viewed by young men, a demographic who turned out in droves to support Trump at the voting booths.<\/p>\n

Chairman\u2019s comments \u2018embarrassing\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

Mr Williams\u2019 comments were lashed by Sky News host Rita Panahi who said the media boss\u2019 admission was \u201cembarrassing\u201d considering the hefty position he holds in Australia\u2019s media landscape.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just shows out of touch and clueless he is and… it doesn\u2019t fill me with confidence,\u201d Panahi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s embarrassing to have someone in a position like that who is so out of touch with the current media environment, with how people consume news, how people have conversations, the public square.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo have such a warped outlook really doesn\u2019t speak well for the job he\u2019s going to do there.\u201d<\/p>\n

ABC\u2019s output is now \u2018poorer\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

In his address, Mr Williams also took aim at the government\u2019s reduction in funding which has taken \u201ca very real toll\u201d on the public broadcaster\u2019s output.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the last decade alone, our operating revenue from government has fallen by 13.7 per cent in real terms or, put in a simple number, an annual reduction of $150 million,\u201d Mr Williams said.<\/p>\n

In a rare admission he said the ABC\u2019s coverage of Australian culture had deteriorated.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs our nation has become richer, our nation\u2019s broadcaster has become much poorer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The admission of decreased capability at the public broadcaster came with a plan to renew the ABC.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo put my case most simply: the ABC needs a plan for renewal and reinvestment, and it needs it now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Williams emphasised the importance of \u201cExtra trusted, high-quality news services, with expanded fact-checking capability\u201d and a \u201cviable strategy to engage in better ways with younger audiences\u201d.<\/p>\n

The call for increased public funding follows an apology issued from the broadcaster earlier this month for \u2018the inaccurate use of gunshots\u2019 and the \u2018potentially misleading use of a quote\u201d during their 2022 Line of Fire reports into the war in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Mr Williams also responded to mining magnate Gina Rinehart\u2019s calls for the Coalition to sell off ABC radio and close ABC TV.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe that either side of Australian politics in the mainstream would ever consider an action of that type seriously,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
